Kevin and I picked up one of his friends in Ann Arbor around mid day.
Ian is a very smart young man, don't let the innocent face fool you though!
You know you're in a college town when some of the residents hold their cars up like this!
Take a closer look. It must not be a Ford!
We headed out of Ann Arbor towards Detroit. The sky's were dark and rain was expected but that wasn't going to keep us away.
We arrived at The Henry Ford Museum where you purchase tickets for any of the many attractions they have. We wanted to see the factory where the new F150 Pickup truck is assembled.
Henry Ford liked to collect items of historical significance and when you enter the lobby you need to look towards the ceiling where the Wright Brothers airplane hangs from the ceiling.
Once you purchase your tickets you are shuttled by bus over to the Rouge assembly plant.
Once at the plant they are very tight in security and photographs are strictly controlled. Absolutely none are allowed in the two theaters were they show you a film about the history of The Ford Motor Company. In the circular second theater you will be shown a very high tech show of the engineering, and assembly that the F150 goes through.
After the theater shows are complete you are then taken to a self guided cat walk tour above the actual assembly plant. A giant conveyor belt moves from one end of the building to another. Each individual platform starts out with the empty body shell. As it moves along the assembly line a well coordinated dance between humans and robots takes place. Each has their individual responsibilities inserting, attaching and ensuring that each of the thousands of pieces it takes to make up a truck is in or on the exact spot it needs to be.
Once done with the assembly tour you can take pictures of some of the cars Ford has produced over its 100 plus year history.
We really enjoyed this tour.
Kevin and Ian in front of the car display. The only area inside the plant where one is allowed to take pictures.
The cars are in immaculate condition.
I wish I had written down the names of each but I didn't have anything to do it with!
I do remember the Thunderbird.....
And the Mustang!
I highly recommend taking this tour if you find yourself in Detroit. We wished we could have taken a tour of the Village where Henry Ford acquired original buildings of American historical significance but the sky opened up and the rain was coming down hard.
We then headed on over to sample some beers at a new Brewery in town named The Batch but that's another story! HAHAHAHAHA
Take the time to create memories without limits.....
