This is what I remember a good county fair reminds me of. All the carnival rides are good but for me it's the involvement of having the livestock, the smell of the barns full of cattle, pigs, sheep and rabbits.
Teenagers and children competing with the animals they have raised all year long, no days off from taking care of them, feeding, cleaning after them comes down to this one day at the fair.
It all starts at a very early age for many.
Learning how to groom and make their charge look the best for the judging.
Presenting them to the judges.
And hoping that all that hard work they've done throughout the year is noticed by the judge.
But county fairs is a lot more than the animals, it's barbecues.....
Carnival rides.....
Playing silly games and hoping to win a huge stuffed animal or toy that you will never use...
Enjoying food that's bad for you....
Horse racing enjoyed by all including the Amish....
Winning....
Taking home big trophys...
Garden competitions....
Grandpas with their granddaughters...
And then there's the loud tractor pull competitions. I don't think there's any farm out there that these guys actually work on!
The thunderous roar they make can blow an ear drum out!
A lady has to earn a living somehow....
And can still look beautiful out in the middle of the action!
Country boys need to impress....!
And the tighter the jeans the better I guess!
But back to the bunnies.....
Lots of bunnies!
I loved going to the fan here in Indiana. We still have them back home in California but they are changing. The animal rights activists are scaring everyone and some are no longer holding livestock competitions. We need to continue supporting them and remembering that without livestock farmers where is our food going to come from? Enjoy your summer as much as I'm enjoying mine and don't forget to get yourself some sweet corn and barbecue!
